Why a broker

Why use a car broker in Los Angeles?

A broker works for you, not the dealership. You tell us the car, we find it, handle the deal with the dealer, and bring it to your door.

This page explains what a car broker does, how a broker gets paid in California, and what to have in writing before you sign.

What a car broker does

You tell the broker what you want: the make, the model, the term and mileage that fit how you drive. The broker takes it from there. They find the car, work out the deal with the dealer, and bring it to you to approve.

At OV1 that looks like four steps:

  1. Tell us what you want. Any make, any model, or a pick from this month's list.
  2. We source and negotiate. We find the car and handle the deal with the dealer.
  3. You approve the numbers. You see the full deal, including our fee in writing, before you sign anything.
  4. We deliver to your door. We come to you, not the other way around.

You deal with one point of contact, start to finish.

How car brokers get paid in California

Brokers are paid a fee for sourcing and negotiating the car. In California, Vehicle Code §11736 requires a broker to tell you the dollar amount of any fee you pay and whether the broker is also paid by the selling dealer, and to confirm both in a written brokering agreement you receive before you sign to buy or lease the car.

At OV1:

  • Our fee is disclosed up front.
  • You see the fee in writing before you sign anything, as part of the deal you approve.
  • If the numbers don't work for you, you don't sign.

The details are on our fee disclosure page. Whoever you work with, ask for the fee in writing and ask who pays it.

What you get in writing before you sign

Before you sign, we send you the whole deal in writing:

  • The total of all payments and the full price of the deal
  • The monthly payment, and whether sales tax is included
  • The term and the miles per year
  • The total due at signing, and what it includes
  • Any loyalty, conquest, or membership requirement
  • Our broker fee

Credit approval comes from the financing institution. OV1 Auto Group is not a lender.

Questions to ask any car broker

  1. What's your fee, and will you put it in writing before I sign? The law requires it.
  2. Is sales tax included in the payment? What's due at signing, and what does it include?
  3. Do I need to qualify for loyalty, conquest, or a membership program?
  4. Who's the lender, and when is my credit checked? OV1 is not a lender. Credit approval is by the financing institution.
